How to Avoid Ad Limit and Ban on Static Tech Blogs cover

Warning sign: AdSense dashboard → "Ad serving limited on some or all of your content." My friend's trigger: Bought cheap Tier 3 traffic + aggressive ad placement on 30 thin AI posts. My own close call: Encouraged newsletter subscribers to "whitelist ads" in a way Google flagged as incentivized clicks.

What triggers limits (2026 reality)

  1. Invalid traffic — bot farms, paid-to-click, self-clicks
  2. Thin content — 200-word posts with 4 ad units
  3. Accidental policy — copyrighted code snippets without commentary
  4. Traffic spikes — 10x overnight from unknown source
  5. Encouraged clicks — "click ads to support site"

Content floor for tech blogs

Minimum per post:
□ 800+ words original commentary
□ Working code examples YOU tested
□ Screenshots or terminal output
□ Max 3 ad units per page
□ No auto-generated mass content

Static site ≠ quality site. 500 generated tutorials will get limited.

Traffic hygiene

  • Enable Cloudflare Bot Fight Mode
  • Block known bad ASNs in firewall rules
  • Don't buy traffic. Ever.
  • Monitor referrers — t.co spikes + 0 engagement = investigate
# Cloudflare firewall — example
(cf.client.bot) and not (cf.verified_bot_category in {"Search Engine Crawler"})
→ Managed Challenge

Ad placement policy

OKNot OK
Ads between sectionsAds that look like navigation
Labeled "Advertisement" (optional but good)Ads pushing content below fold entirely
Sticky footer with paddingFloating ads covering code blocks

If you get limited

  1. Don't create new AdSense account — ban cascade
  2. Remove worst offenders (thin pages, excess ads)
  3. Request review in Policy center
  4. Wait 30 days — don't churn site structure daily
  5. Diversify: Adsterra, affiliate, sponsors while limited

Recovery timeline (friend's site)

Day 0: Limited
Day 14: Removed 120 thin posts, kept 80 originals
Day 30: Requested review
Day 45: Limit lifted
Day 90: RPM recovered to 85% of pre-limit

Static-site-specific risks

  • Staging indexed: AdSense on preview.example.com with duplicate content
  • Tag page monetization: 50 near-duplicate tag pages with ads
  • 404 with ads: custom 404 still showed sidebar ad (removed)

ads.txt integrity

Unauthorized sellers in ads.txt = revenue leak, sometimes policy issue. Audit quarterly.

My current safeguards

□ Max 3 ad units/page (enforced in shortcode)
□ noindex on tag pages < 3 posts
□ No ads on /search, /404, /thank-you
□ Plausible anomaly alerts on traffic spikes
□ Monthly manual click test (1 click, never again)

Ad limits are recoverable. Bans from new accounts aren't. Play long-term.
